Director Stacey Tenenbaum’s documentary Tough Old Broads tells the stories of Katherine Switzer, Siila Watt-Cloutier, and Sharon Farmer – three trailblazing women who broke barriers in their day and are still actively pursuing their passions as they age. They’re inspiring a new generation of women by showing us what it takes to break barriers and how that spirit can continue and change throughout a lifetime.

At this screening, THIRD ACTion Film Festival is hosting a discussion after the film led by Rose Bene and joined by Mary Valentich.

Rose Bene is a semi-retired university instructor, instructional designer and media producer who is passionate about using film as a vehicle for exploring ageism. As a board member of THIRD ACTion Film Festival for eight years and its current chair, she has steadfastly supported the festival's mission of creating a more accurate, intergenerational dialogue on aging. Rose is also an actor/ playwright and the President of FLC Seniors’ Acting Club, a non-profit group dedicated to providing adults 55+ with training and opportunities to participate in live theatre.

Mary Valentich is a Professor Emerita in the Faculty of Social Work, University of Calgary since 1998. She and her late partner, Dr. James Gripton joined the Faculty in 1976 when they moved to Calgary.  Throughout her 61 year career as a social worker and educator, she has promoted social justice and human rights for all persons. She was a founding member of two sexual assault centres (Ottawa, 1973 and Calgary, 1976); the Varsity Out of School program (1983), the evolution of the December 6 Memorial at the University of Calgary; and changing “Alderman” to “Councillor” (1987-2013). Since 2013, after assisting her friend, Hanne Schafer to attain a court exemption for her assisted dying in 2016, Mary has been active in advancing people’s rights to choice in dying.

Tough Old Broads Unite Come to the screening. And, let's promote some local tough old broads. As part of building a community of #ToughOldBroads, the filmmakers are looking for women to speak up and share their accomplishments in short video submissions. The younger generation is invited to pledge to pick up the baton and push boundaries into their older age. The videos will be featured on the film’s official site and their social channels.

Check out tough old broads Lisa LaFlamme and Elizabeth May.
